Every year millions of people go under the knife, risking so much to improve on their appearance. Many walk away with life altering repercussions that damage them inside and out. In 2010 13.1 million people made this decision. (The American Society of Plastic Surgeons 02/07/2011 par. 1) A study performed the same year by Heidi Montag discovered that “37% of respondents said they were happy with their results, with 37% saying they were dissatisfied and 26% stating they had mixed emotions.” (Elena Gorgan 8/8/10 par. 3) That means that 63% of the patients are not happy with the results! People need to know the side effects of cosmetic surgery before they are part of that 63%. If this information is not spread, more people will end up with horrible side effects. Cosmetic surgery can be a threat to your physical, financial, and mental well being.
The physical repercussions of cosmetic surgery are not always “pretty”. There are many side effects that come with cosmetic surgery some can even cause more surgery. Theses include “bad scarring, unevenness of the face, fluid collect under the skin, irregular skin shape, change in skin color.” (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002989.htm par. 5)
Having to go back in to get more surgery also means paying more bills, something that many patients can’t afford. One of the most famous side effects of cosmetic surgery is when the patient looks as though his/her’s face is plastered in the same expression. This is due to the damage of the nerves that control muscles under the face.
Geisinger 2
(http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002989.htm par. 4) Theses are just more reasons
to never perform cosmetic surgery. With all the risks of cosmetic surgery and the damages that it can cause why would anyone decide to go through with it? This is a question still unanswered in my mind. The physical side effects of cosmetic surgery should not be overlooked.
Cosmetic surgery is a costly procedure that can put a person well into debt if not paid close attention to. Many plastic surgeons advertise their prices as only the “surgeon's fee”. This is just the cost of the surgery, it excludes all the hospital bills, anesthetics etc., making it seem like it’s a good cost when really the patient would have to pay much more. The surgeon's fee is only 60-80% of the total cost. (http://www.infoplasticsurgery.com/cost-plastic-surgery/cost/ par.1) This trick is offten used by cosmetic surgens and posses a serious threat to the poeople who are blind sided by the price of sugery. Another threat is addiction. When addicted to cosmetic surgery people have to pay lots of money to keep up with with their expensive mental disease. Alicia Douvall is someone suffering from an addiction to cosmetic surgery, it takes her “every penny” that she makes to keep up her doctors appointments. Alicia has had so many surgeries that she says “I've had so many operations that I can't feel my stomach, my left breast, or anything under my right arm,"(The Independent 2/10/09 par.1 and 2) There are many others just like Alicia who are running themselves into the ground with cosmetic surgery. There are some that argue that people should be smart enough to know what they can and can’t afford with cosmetic surgery this is true but, when they aren’t told about all the other costs with like the hospital bill, anesthetics, postoperative medicine and operations etc, they can’t anticipate the real bill. People don’t realize how expensive cosmetic surgery is or how it will damage them.
Patients can become mentally unstable when exposed to cosmetic surgery. Reports of depression after cosmetic surgery are by far not uncommon. People who go through with cosmetic

surgery are obviously self conscious about themselves, or at least enough to feel like they need to
change to look beautiful so going through something like surgery can be very degrading. This was
well expressed by Chandramita Bora in her article on Buzzle “People suffer from intense regret and anger toward themselves and the doctor for a procedure gone horribly wrong, not to mention
embarrassment and criticism they might face from friends and family.” (3/8/2012 par.5 ) Can you imagine feeling bad about yourself, being persuaded into cosmetic surgery, then coming home and being ridiculed by the people around you? What you're imagining is the sad reality for many people. What is stated in the paragraph above is the addiction to cosmetic surgery. This is due to a disorder called ‘Body Dysmorphic Disorder’ or BDD this is when you don’t see yourself as physically good enough. (The Independent 2/10/09 par. 3) This disorder is more widely associated with people who have anorexia. (that book) Some might say that for people with mental issues that have to do with their bodies cosmetic surgery can help them overcome their illness. This can be true for some however, they are at more of a risk going into surgery than others. People who have had a history of physiological issues are at a higher risk of getting another mental illness. (http://www.bodyhealthbook.com/surgery/side-effects-of-cosmetic-surgery par.5). With theses horrible mental risks, cosmetic surgery can endanger the humans not only physically, and financially but mentally.
As you can see the unawareness of cosmetic surgery is a growing problem that, if not stopped, will cause huge problems for the human race. The financial, mental, and physical health of every person that alters their appearance with cosmetic surgery is in jeopardy. The only solution the fast developing problem is to never put your well being in the hands of another that you don’t know.So many people don’t know the facts about cosmetic surgery and the horrible side effects
Geisinger 4
that it can cause, so if you or anyone you know are thinking of altering your bodys please think twice before you are swepted such a big decision that you could regret later.

Review/Comments
In this essay I focused on the side effects of cosmetic surgery, a problem that I hope one day will be resolved. I was very hesitant to do my speech and became very nevus before I started but, to my surprise, I was chosen to become a speech finalist and went all the way to the Seroptomist women's final.
