Vixen
Gloria Carmody is the main character in the historical fiction novel The Flapper's Vixen by Jillian Larkin. This book follows Gloria, a privileged girl from a wealthy family marring a rich man; seemingly the perfect life. But, Gloria's feels differently. To her, her life is falling apart. This all changes when she visits the Green Mill, a speakeasy, with her closest friend, Marcus Eastman. Her life suddenly spins in a whole new direction when she meets Jerome Jonson, a black pianist. She falls in love with him and the flapper life soon the Green Mill becomes her second home that she hides from her first. Gloria is a inspiration to me because she is confident; she is a risk taker; and most of all she is different.
Gloria Carmody captivates the reader with her confidence. One example was when Gloria first cut her hair into a short bob. In the twenties only defiant flappers would cut their hair so boyishly short. Though Gloria's mother, fiancé, an every person on the streets looked at her as if she were nude she held her head high showing her real confidence. Another example of her confidence was when she got on stage at the Green Mill for the first time. Clara, Gloria's cousin, captured this in the quote "And then Gloria opened her lips and took over the room." Yes Gloria was nervous before, but she commanded the attention of every person at this speakeasy with her confidence.
Gloria stunned me threw out his whole story with very risk she took. When Gloria and Jerome, the man she loves, decide to run away together she steals her fiancé's gun to take with her. Taking he the gun with her was a huge risk on the account that at some point Bastian would find out it's gone maybe even find her because of the gun. But also when she stole the gun Bastian was in the next room over taking on the phone to a mob boss that was trying to find her! Not to mention when she first entered the Green Mill and met Jerome she took off her engagement ring and lied about who she was. In Gloria's defense if they knew that she was just some rich girl they wouldn't have thought of her seriously. But, she still risked her friendships at the club and her sining career with Jerome by lying.
Gloria is just al together different. Some might say that it is a weakness but in my eyes, it makes her stand out as a strong individual. Most people in the twenties didn't even want to be associated with a colored person yet Gloria didn't care. When she is with Jerome she doesn't care that people stare and judge she just wants to love him. She started singing just to have an excuse to be with Jerome. Like wise, almost any girl in her position would be trilled to marry Bastian, he's rich, good looking and high in the community, but Gloria wants a small life. The only reason she went to the Green Mill in the first place was because she was unsure about her engagement. In Vixen Gloria thought to herself "I want so much more than this" which goes to prove she wasn't happy with her wealthy life.
Finally, through not only her risks but her different and confident personality Gloria can easily be an inspiration to the reader. Gloria's thought through out Vixen evoke such an interest that it's hard to put it down. She is such a role mode not only for the reader but the twenties itself. If it wasn't for the people like Gloria who didn't car about race or money the world would defiantly be a different place. I loved this book so much and learned that love over comes all.

Review/Comments
In this essay I wrote about the novel VIXEN. This book was all about the 1920's and a forbidden romance between a african american and a rich white girl. I liked writing this essay because it let me focus on my book, and let me show what a great book VIXEN is.
